What A Bill Russell Statue Might Look Like

Imagine a Bill Russell statue in Boston. (Courtesy of Nate Morrow)
This morning, the Boston Herald reported it’s not a matter of if, but where. President Obama is calling on Boston to erect a monument to the legendary Bill Russell.
“I hope that one day, in the streets of Boston, children will look up at a statue built not only to Bill Russell the player, but Bill Russell the man,” the president said Tuesday, before presenting Russell with a Medal of Freedom.
Boston graphic designer and sports fan Nate Morrow (@nsmorrow) is taking the idea one step further: He mocked up a Russell statue in Photoshop.
Using Google Maps, Morrow found the perfect grassy spot in front of the Garden, over I-93. “I thought of the (Bobby) Orr statue, which went up last year outside the Garden,” he said. “So why not put a Celtic up near the Garden?”
The photo of Russell used in this mockup, by the way, is also on the Wheaties box.

I believe a monument to Bill Russell SHOULD be erected in a location of prominence adjacent to the “Garden”. I also believe that it would be a crying shame if it doesn’t happen in his lifetime !!!
It is rather deplorable that it hasn’t occurred to date … AND JUST RECENTLY … it had to be brought into the national spotlight by President Barack Obama !!!
I would say that Gov. Patrick & Mayor Menino have a wee bit of egg on their chins, no ?
Many would agree that this LONG OVERDUE acknowledgement WILL happen, especially given the fact that the Pres. is “watching” … and perhaps awaiting an invitation to the unveiling.
Whatever the City, State, Investors, etc. decide upon, I hope it will be done FIRST CLASS, Front & Center, and without the compulsive need to SERVE THEIR OWN INTERESTS, AGENDA, etc !
I say, let us make this right Boston … and let us do it post haste !!!
It’s perfect: a statue to a useless sports “hero” positioned over a depressed central artery based on a photograph from a crackerjacks, excuse me, cereal box. Empty, emptier and emptiest. Meanwhile the real heroes in boston design rockets, cure cancer and create jobs literally out of nothing except their brains. Something neither basketball nor Prez Obrother seem to offer in abundanza.
Looks great. It looks like he is actually floating. Just a suggestion…If the ground can be made in a little dome shaped, i think it will add some grace the statue.
